Minister Helder (Sport) has spoken out against the arrival of a Super League today. When asked by Member of Parliament Mohammed Mohandis (PvdA) whether the cabinet wanted to speak out publicly against the Super League, the sports minister answered with a resounding 'yes'. Minister Helder: “Every child in the Netherlands should be able to continue to dream of reaching the highest level. That is why I am absolutely against the arrival of a Super League.”
Earlier, the entire Dutch football (VVCS, Eredivisie, Keuken Kampioen Divisie, KNVB and the Supporters Collective) asked the minister to speak out against the Super League. In recent decades, a model based on values such as sportsmanship and financial solidarity has emerged in European football. Just Spee, President of the KNVB: “For a future-proof European football ecosystem that respects the European Sportsmodel, we must continue to look for new opportunities, but these can never be at the expense of the national competitions. It is therefore an important signal that the minister has taken position during today’s debate against the arrival of a Super League.
A hearing of the Court of Justice of the European Union is scheduled for 11 and 12 July. Other government leaders and countries have already announced their position. The Dutch cabinet is now also making a strong statement that is aligned with the interest of Dutch and European Football based on the open values that characterize European football.”
